MrinmoyGoogle adopts a dessert naming scheme for every version of its Android operating system until now. Every time the company got close to releasing a new version of its mobile operating system, speculations would arise on which foodstuff the company would ultimately settle. Now Google breaks its tradition after more than a decade by announcing the name of the upcoming mobile OS as Android 10.
Google started the tradition of naming its Android versions after sweets starting with cupcake and ending with Android Pie. There have been around 17 versions of Android with 13 of them being named after desserts. The reason Google says that the desserts weren’t universal enough for the 2.5 billion devices around the world.
In a post on The Keyword | Google Blogs, Sameer Samat, VP of Management, Android explained why the change was necessary.
Our engineering team has always used internal code names for each version, based off of tasty treats, or desserts, in alphabetical order. This naming tradition has become a fun part of the release each year externally, too. But we’ve heard feedback over the years that the names weren’t always understood by everyone in the global community.
So, this next release of Android will simply use the version number and be called Android 10. We think this change helps make release names simpler and more intuitive for our global community. And while there were many tempting “Q” desserts out there, we think that at version 10 and 2.5 billion active devices, it was time to make this change
Android 10- New Logo update
Android will also be updating its logo, Sameer explained saying the “Android brand has evolved over time”. The company last updated the logo in 2014 giving it the brand color. This year, the logo will be getting a more modern, accessible look. He added that the new logo will be used in the coming weeks with the final release of Android 10.
Android released a video titled ‘The next evolution of Android’. In the video, users were given a glimpse of the coming changes to the Android brand while retaining the classic Green Google Android BOT. The Android Q currently is in its 6th beta version, which is usually the final beta version. The final version is slated to launch in October 2019.
Lets take a trip down the memory lane and see the previous Android versions with their Dessert names.
