Unreal Engine 5 was unveiled on 13 May 2020 and is scheduled to be introduced in mid-2021. The game is supporting all current platforms, including the next-gen PS 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. Development on the engine began almost two years before it was revealed.
Epic has worked closely with Sony to develop Unreal Engine 5 for PlayStation 5. With Epic assisting Sony with the console’s data model. Sweeney claimed it is “years ahead of what one would find on a Windows for any amount of money right now”.
On Wednesday, May 13, Epic Games officially presented the public with a first look at the new version of Unreal Engine 5.
Coinciding with the launch of Unreal Engine 5, Epic Games published a PlayStation 5 demo that reveals what the engine is capable of providing in terms of graphics and overall appearance.
Unreal Engine 5 Demo
To display the functionality of UE5, Epic put together a preview running on the developer version of the PS5 hardware and recorded the performance. The results show outstanding image consistency, combined with precision and photo-realistic lighting Epic promises to offer the new devices.
UE5 was released with a real-time demo of Lumen in the Land of Nanite running on PlayStation 5. The gameplay demo included two of the latest key innovations that will appear in Unreal Engine 5, named Nanite and Lumen.
Nanite is a device that introduces billions of polygons directly through the Unreal Engine.
Lumen is a truly integrated global lighting system that responds to scenes and shifts of color, helping to make the games look even more natural.
The video also reveals the quick loading of large game worlds that’ll be allowed by made-in SSD technology in PS 5.
As per Kim Libreri, Epic’s Chief operating officer, “next-gen consoles will give users a quantum leap, and UE5 is yet another leap forward”.
