There is something about a buddy-cop movie that has always intrigued Hollywood. And because of that reason, we have seen countless number of those films. The one that stands out among all of these is the Jump Street film franchise. In a genre that is highly exploited, nobody would have expected a comedy buddy cop drama to perform so successfully at the box office. And the fact that it was a reboot of the famous 1987 TV series of the same name was a surprise nobody knew they deserved. The two Jump Street films rose to such success that they have a cult following of their own.
23 Jump Street- What we know so far
At the end of 22 Jump Street, the film itself made fun of the idea of sequels, in the form of fictional ideas for a number of sequels to the film, and also an animated series and a toy line. However, there was news back in 2014 that there would be a 23 Jump Street, and that it would be a crossover with the Men in Black franchise. This news was leaked after the hack on Sony. Lord and Miller were brought on as writer and producer. In 2016, it was revealed that the title of the crossover film would be MIB 23.
However, the plans for this sequel/crossover fell through, and the film was cancelled in January 2019. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill had both stated in interviews that the stakes were too high for a sequel and that if it did happen, it would kill the purpose of the joke itself.
All hope is not lost, yet. After MIB 23 was cancelled, Phil Lord had confirmed that there is a female centric Jump Street movie in the works as well. Tiffany Haddish and Zendaya are rumoured to play mother-daughter duo in the reboot of the franchise. Awkwafina is also in talks to star in the film. The film will be titled 24 Jump Street, and will tentatively come out around 2021, or latest by 2022. And if Lord and Miller still plan on bringing back the famous cop buddies Jenko and Schmidt, we can except 23 Jump Street by 2024.
