Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8 scripts have been discarded due to the Black Lives Matter protests. Actor Terry Crews(plays Terry Jeffords) stated that creator Dan Goor and his team have discarded the scripts for season 8. This is because of George Floyd’s death and the protests that followed. Terry Crews said that the police procedural comedy series would be moving forward in a new direction!

Terry Crews’ Interview

In an interview with Access Daily, Crews revealed that the scripts have been scrapped. He also shared his own experiences with the police.

Here’s what Crews said:

“You’ve seen me, in movies or whatever but before all this, I was always a threat. I would be going to the mall or going different places. I’ve had guns pointed at me by police officers in L.A. This was before I was famous. The thing is, they had the wrong guy.”

“It’s something that every black man has been through and it’s hard to really try to get people to understand. I have to say, right here, what is going on right now is Black America’s Me Too Movement. We always knew this was happening, but now white people are understanding.”

Crews continued, “With that George Floyd video that came out it literally opened up the world because now you’ve experienced it and you have to go through the same trauma that Black America has been going through.”

Terry also said that he was worried for the safety of his teen son. “As a young black man, you’re not going to be treated as a 14-year-old, especially by the police. He was scared, I’ll be honest, it’s not one of those things where he gets heart palpitations when a police car goes by. It’s not the same. He does not feel safe, there’s a threat feeling”, Terry said.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Portrayal Of Police Brutality

In Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the 16th episode, Moo Moo of season 4 focused on Terry Crews. Terry experiences racial profiling when an officer nearly arrests him for wandering near his house at night. He then consults with Holt on what is to be done. For many viewers, this episode felt ‘real, serious and honest’ compared to the show’s usual goofiness. But viewers also feel that the show has been on the safe side regarding police behaviour and brutality.

Here’s what Crews said about the show’s future:

“We’ve had a lot of somber talks about it and deep conversations and we hope through this we’re going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year. We have an opportunity and we plan to use it in the best way possible. Our show-runner Dan Goor, they had four episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash. We have to start over. Right now we don’t know what direction it’s going to go in.”

Terry hopes that Brooklyn Nine-Nine can contribute to this change and impact the viewers!

He says, “This is an opportunity right now for us all to unite and get together and understand what this is and that we have to battle this together.”

The show is set to return in 2021 on NBC. Let’s hope that they come back with a huge impact and change!

I am a passionate writer just trying to figure out life and myself. Writing has always been a way of expressing myself, hence most of my work is pretty raw and unprocessed. I try my best to be unapologetic about what I write. This internship in ByProduct Ventures has allowed me to push myself and see what all I am capable of. I have always pictured the future me as someone very creative and this opportunity takes me one step towards that. Apart from writing, I also love expressing myself by painting or drawing. All I want from life is to keep learning, falling and rising and to live every moment like it is my last! (aditigautam1705@gmail.com)
