The series was launched in 2020 as a part of Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek Universe. The series has been produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout, Weed Road Pictures, Escapist Fare and Roddenberry Entertainment. The show has been designed to be slow and more character-focused in comparison to the previous series in the franchise.

The filming of the series has been done mainly in California and Michael Chabon has been the showrunner in the first season and Terry Matalas took over in the second season when Michael Chabon moved to other commitments. The series has been well-received by the audience as well as critics. It has an approval rating of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and has scored 76 out of 100 on Metacritic. The series has won various accolades and nominations at Primetime Emmy Awards 2020, Costume Designers Guild Awards 2021 and Critics’ Choice Super Awards 2021.
