Gerard Butler starrer Den of Thieves released in 2018 and was a surprise hit among moviegoers. Although the film didn’t receive exceptional praise from the critics, it did well enough at the box office to get a sequel. The film was made with a budget of $30 million and grossed $80 million at the box office. The crime thiller, directed by Christian Gudegast was based in Lost Angeles. It is about a group of County Sheriff Deputies who try to stop a gang of thieves who look to rob the Federal Reserve of $30 million in bills that are scheduled to be shredded. The film is a classic heist movie, and with the ending of the film being what it was, a sequel was inevitable.
Den of Thieves 2- What we know so far
At the end of the first film, we saw that Nick and his team had failed to catch the thieves, and even though the money that was supposed to be stolen was accounted for at the bank, it felt like there had been some heist that definitely took place. Donnie is revealed as the mastermind behind all of this, and we see him bartending in London, with his closest friends now rich and retired.
As the sequel was announced in 2018, director Christian Gudegast revealed that he had researched about the Pink Panther mafia for years and that the sequel will be based on that. He also said that it will take place all over Europe. The central storyline will however focus on Nick chasing after Donnie, but will also involve another organization chasing after the detective himself. So it will be sort of a subplot embedded within the main plot. How Gudegast plans to tie that all up into an interesting storyline will be fun to watch.
Den of Thieves 2- Cast and Release Date
Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. are expected to reprise their roles as Detective Nicholas “Big Nick” O’Brien and Donnie Wilson, respectively. Christian Gudegast also returns as director. The film will be set up in Europe. In December 2019, the title of the film was officially announced. The sequel will be titled Den of Thives 2: Pantera.
There has been no official release date announced yet. Given that principal production is yet to begin on the second film, and with the COVID-19 pandemic still ravaging, we can expect the film to release sometime in 2021.
