Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road is set to make a comeback for the next film in the series. The film will be a spin-off prequel featuring Charlize Theron’s character Furiosa as the central subject. The film will tell the tale of Furiosa in her early years long before her paths crossed with Mad Max, played by Tom Hardy in the 2015 film. Despite Theron’s magnificent portrayal of Furiosa as a determined post-apocalyptic warrior, director George Miller does not want to go ahead with digital de-aging technology (used in The Irishman and Star Wars films The Rise of Skywalker and Rogue One) and reprise Theron as young Furiosa. Miller admitted to looking for someone else after long consideration about the de-aging option for Theron.
Who will play Furiosa?
Anyways its good news for Mad Max fans that another film in the series is sure to arrive, with or without Theron. The storyline is set decades before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road took place. Miller is looking for someone in her 20s to feature in the prequel as young Furiosa. Anya Taylor-Joy, known for her outstanding performances in her debut The Witch (2015), then in Night Shyamalan’s horror-thriller Split and its sequel Glass, is said to be in talks for the lead role. Recently, she has also given an audition to the selectors via Skype during the on-going pandemic crisis for the same.

Production Status
Miller told The New York Times that this Furiosa prequel is in his top priority list after he finishes his on-going project as writer/director for Three Thousand Years of Longing, a fantasy film starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. That project was in the pre-production stage before everything came to a deadlock due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. “So, after we finish it [Three Thousand Years of Longing], and hopefully everything settles down with the pandemic, we’ll see what the world allows us to do with Furiosa,” he said.
