Outriders: Release Date, Trailer, Gameplay

Square Enix announced Outriders for the first time at E3 2019 with a cinematic trailer depicting a gritty sci-fi co-op shooter. The upcoming title is being developed by People Can Fly, the same company that made Gears of War: Judgement and Bulletstorm, and it’s scheduled to be launched in February 2021.

Here’s everything we know about Outriders:

Release Date

Square Enix originally had a release date of Summer 2020, which was then pushed to Holiday 2020. As it stands the game missed both these windows. The developers have since confirmed that the game will be released on February 2nd, 2021. Square Enix reconfirmed this release date at The Game Awards on December 10.

Trailer

The latest Outriders trailer was showcased at The Game Awards on December 10. It reveals more details about the gameplay.

Platforms

Outriders was announced for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in June 2019, but in February 2020, we learned that the game will also be releasing for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Gaming Bolt reports that its launch will be simultaneous across all five platforms when Outriders’ release date does roll around. Outriders will feature the smart delivery system, which entitles owners of the game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles to a free upgrade on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Square Enix has also confirmed that Outriders will be coming to the Google Stadia as well, later in 2021.

Gameplay

Outriders is a third-person shooter that can be played either alone or in a group with up to two other friends. The game intends on being less cartoonish than People Can Fly’s last game Bulletstorm, but it’ll feature visceral gore and weapons as well. The weapons will be fairly realistic to start with but can be upgraded and modified over the course of the game to apply effects such as burn or poison.

Various RPG elements have been merged into the game as well. Players have the ability to customize their character’s appearance and will be able to choose between four different classes that give abilities to use in addition to one’s weapons: The Trickster, the Pyromancer, the Devastator, and The Technomancer.

Story

Outriders features the titular group of characters who were part of the last defense for humanity after Earth is ravaged beyond repair by climate change. The survivors flee to a planet called Enoch, which initially seems nice, but a mysterious force called “the anomaly” ruins typical technology and warps anything it touches. The lead characters fall into a 30-year coma after being caught in it and have special abilities when they come to.

From there, it appears that players will have to deal with a bunch of different factions scattered throughout Enoch to hopefully restore some semblance of a peaceful civilization.

Outriders will be available to play on February 2nd, 2021!
