The Many Saints of Newark: Plot and Cast
If you haven’t watched The Sopranos yet, you’ll be in for a treat! The show is about Italian-American family patriarch Anthony “Tony” Soprano who is also the hidden leader of the New Jersey mafia. The show deals with his struggles to manage both his family and his role as a mobster, which causes him frequent anxiety. To cure it, he visits a therapist every week, who goes by the name of Jennifer Melfi, also an Italian (not a coincidence).
The show focuses on the Italian-American community in New Jersey and especially the mob business. It also focuses on the characters Carmela Soprano, wife of Tony Soprano and Christopher Moltisanti, nephew to Tony Soprano. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest TV shows of all time.
The prequel, The Many Saints of Newark, is set in the 1950s and 1960s. During the riots of 1967, there were a lot of tensions between the Italian-American and African-American communities, which are highlighted in the movie.
The movie features Michael Gandolfini, son of late James Gandolfini in the role of young Tony Soprano, the older version of whom was played by his father. Alessandro Nivola plays Dickie Moltisanti, father of Christopher Moltisanti and Jon Bernthal plays Giovanni “Johnny Boy” Soprano, Tony Soprano’s father.
