After an unprecedented global success of Money Heist (La Casa de Papel), Netflix teamed up with writer and showrunner Alex Pina for another thriller series titled White Lines. Set in a dual timeline on the Spanish Balearic Islands, the show will revolve around a murder investigation of a Manchester DJ by his sister 20 years after he disappeared. This 10-part series intertwines multiple genres and complex storylines into something truly original. The show is already picking up the beat of being a huge hit among Money Heist fans across the world even before its official release.
Release Date
White Lines will show up on Netflix worldwide on this Friday 15th May to add some thrill to your quarantine. Filming of the show took place in the previous summer from June to October on the Balearic Islands. These Spanish islands are more commonly known by their individual names of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. These islands are popular for beaches, rave parties and luxurious hotels and the drugs culture.
Cast
The top-notch cast of White Lines includes several familiar faces. Laura Haddock, who played Meredith Quill in the two Guardians of the Galaxy films, will take up the lead role as the DJ’s sister Zoe. Tom Rhys Harris, Jekyll and Hyde’s Sackler, will play Zoe’s DJ brother Axel. Daniel Mays from Line of Duty, Angela Griffin from The Detail and Laurence Fox from Victoria will be a part of the main cast. Others include Shazam’s Marta Milans and Good Behaviour’s Juan Diego Botto. Apparently no one from the lead cast of Pina’s previous hit Money Heist has reprised for his new show.
Plot
The show will simultaneously go back and forth between the two narratives of present and the past. A group of music-loving teens in Manchester have a knack at pulling off illegal rave parties. Gradually they leave England and move to Ibiza, the hotspot of drug-fuelled raves in ambitions of becoming superstar-DJs one day. Their initial days are full of dreams and hedonism. But things begin get dirty when Axel (Harris), the most talented in the team, gets murdered. Apart being a great talent, Alex was obsessive by nature and had some self-destructive tendencies. He was involved with the daughter of one Ibiza’s most powerful and dangerous families. He had invited himself trouble after trying off pulling off some dangerous stunts. After disappearing for 20 years, when his dead body is found, Alex’s sister Zoe (Haddock) takes into her hands the complex investigation about what actually happened to him.
NME did a video-call interview withthe top cast of White Lines to get some insight into this highly anticipated thriller. “It was a treat reading those scripts,” said Haddock, who plays Zoe. “I’d just finished watching Money Heist, and I just love how Pina’s brain works. His character crafting, his story arcs – they’re incredible. It’s mad, entertaining and super-high octane but it’s also rooted in emotional truth. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.”
“I quite like the fact she has no shame at all. Anna walks through that party and she’s the queen, it’s her domain, she’s giving everyone a good time – and she wants to be adored for that. There’s something about that confidence I really admire – but I absolutely couldn’t do it myself,” said Agela Griffin, while talking about her character.
