Netflix Announces the Continuation of ‘The Last Kingdom’ Series with another Season?

History lovers should be ready to get another chance to revise their books again, though fictionally. Shortly after the success of “The Last Kingdom Season 4”, Netflix officially announced its return for season 5. The Last Kingdom Season 5 is back. Season 4 was a success overall and got some good sense of reviews. All 10 episodes of season 4 were released on the 26th of April, 2020.

The Last Kingdom is a British fictional television series produced by Carnival Films. It is based on a novel series named ” The Saxon Stories” written by Bernard Cornwell. These book series include – The Last Kingdom, The Pale Horseman, The Lords of the North, Sword Song, The Burning Land, Death of Kings, The Pagan Lord, The Empty Throne, Warriors of the Storm, The Flame Bearer, War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings.

This story revolves around the year of 866 where England was divided into 7 kingdoms. In this era, Vikings were the most powerful of all. The conquered the York and regularly attacked the parts of Anglo-Saxon. Finally all Anglo- Saxon came under the rule of the Vikings, only the kingdom of Wessex was left. This series shows the struggle of people and the rulers to save their kingdom from the enemies.

Cast

Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg played the lead character and was appreciated for his work. David Dawson, Tobias Santelmann, Emily Cox, Adrian Bower, Thomas W. Gabrielsson, Simon Kunz, Harry McEntire, Rune Temte, Joseph Millson, Brian, Vernel, Amy Wren, Charlie Murphy, Ian Hart, Eliza Butterworth, Thure Lindhardt, Eva Birthistle, Gerard Kearns also played important roles in this series.

Release

The first season of “The Last Kingdom” was released in the United States of America on 10 October 2015, on BBC America. It was also released shortly in the United Kingdom on 22 October 2015 on BBC two. After seeing the success of this series it was decided to release it on an online platform for its all-time viewers. As decided, all 10 episodes were released on Netflix on 28 October 2015 in many countries and on 6 July 2016 in the United States.

The rest of the seasons were also released on Netflix, subsequently. Season 2 with 8 episodes was released on 16 March 2017. Season 3 with 10 episodes was released on 19 November 2018. Season 4 was released on 24 April 2020 on the same online platform.

Synopsis

The series started off with Osbert, the second son of king Uhtred, who sees Viking ships approaching their castle. King Uhtred sends his eldest don, Uhtred to keep an eye on them, which costs him his life. After the death of his eldest son, King Uhtred named Osbert as Uhtred and commanded him to continue his legacy. With the suggestion of Uhtred, King Ahltred commanded his army to attack the Viking Danes, but he was brutally defeated.

Season 3 of ‘The Last Kingdom’ was real action-packed and created a sense of finality among its viewers. But after seeing the craze and responses the makers decided to extend this series a little more. It also closed the rivalry between King Alfred and the Uhtred of bebbanburg. Therefore it was expected to be a break moment for this series.

Undoubtedly, ‘ The Last Kingdom’ forced all of us to feel the harshness and complexions of that era. At the end of this season, Uhtred decided to return to his own land of Bebbanburg, after hearing that it was suffering from the attacks of the Scots. There was huge bloodshed in the furious battle between which took many lives and created havoc, at the end of the 4th season.

Season 5 plot

The first 4 seasons have covered almost 8 books of ‘The Saxton Stories’, therefore it is quite clear that season 5 would cover the ninth and tenth books of the book series, ie Warriors of the Storm and The flame bearer. We could also expect to see more of action and developing a relationship between Sigtryggr and Stierra. The upcoming season would also focus on the Uhtred daughter, who would be growing into an independent and courageous woman. There could also be the return of the Uhtred second son who was missing from season four but will definitely play an important part. A lot more suspense and thriller would also be there for sure.

The official synopsis of ‘The Last Kingdom’ season five says: “The fifth installment will see Uhtred realize his destiny is more than just Bebbanburg: it is tied to the future of England itself. Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.”

When Alexander Dreymon was asked about his lead role, then he replied – “I was really worried about this, to be perfectly honest with you. David Dawson is a phenomenal actor. And if you saw the ending of Season 3, those scenes we had together were just honestly the best moments of my acting career and I think the dynamic he and I had in the show was one of the most compelling factors of it. And so I was worried going into the season about how it was going to be without him, and we all missed him enormously. But I’m really glad to hear you say that. His presence is felt all throughout Season 4 because I think it’s just so important that he’s still there. But it’s really thanks to David Dawson’s talent that he’s still here with us in a way because he made such an impact.”
