Becca Kufrin Reacts To Fiance Garrett Yrigoyen’s Controversial Police Support Post!

2018’s Bachelorette Becca Kufrin was in conversation with Rachel Lindsay recently. She spoke about her fiance Garrett Yrigoyen’s controversial Instagram post. They spoke on the latest Bachelorette Happy Hour podcast. They also spoke about Rachel’s feelings as a black woman.

What Did Becca Kufrin Say About The Post?

Becca said, ” Garrett is my fiance and I love him and to his core, I believe that he is a good person. What he posted…I don’t align with and I don’t agree with. I don’t think he meant it in a malicious way, I do think it was tone deaf and it was the wrong time and message and sentiment. I’m trying to get him to see the bigger picture.”

This conversation came up because of Garrett’s controversial post on Instagram. He posted a photo of a ‘Thin Blue Line’. This implies that he supports police officers. Becca said that she disagrees with him on this but she explained why he put up that post. She said that his buddy’s partner got shot in the back of his head in the #BlackLivesMatter protests, so he just wanted to show his support for them.

Here’s what Garrett’s post exactly read:

“I’ve been pretty tore up the past week about everything going on. I’ve listened, learned, helped, supported, and grown. With so many friends and family in law enforcement, I couldn’t sit back and not support them and the hundreds of thousands of men and women of all races that represent this Thin Blue Line as well. It’s important for me to recognize the ones who stand in the gap and put their lives on the line each and every single day for humans of different race and ethnicity, including those who hate them.”

Here’s What Rachel Lindsay Had To Say To This:

Rachel says she doesn’t agree. She said, “That is what it means. That’s 100 percent what it means. I don’t care what he wrote after it.” Lindsay also said:

“As a black woman, it is very important for me to tell you how Garrett’s post made me feel. This is not an isolated accident with Garrett’s behavior and I never spoke about what Garrett did during your season. I never spoke about it and it was out of respect for you and your relationship. …To me, this is what Garrett thinks, this is what Garrett is. He posted a black box. He never said ‘Black Lives Matter’. He posted fists of every color, which to me is like ‘Everybody, all lives’. And then the very next post is the thin blue line with a heartfelt, thought-out caption that he said with his chest. And to me, that is what you feel and that is what you believe. I don’t think Garrett is malicious, but Garrett is what the problem is.”

Rachel Lindsay also thinks that ‘she would rather someone be racist than to share the same mindset as Garrett.’ Lindsay also said, “The problem is the people who don’t realize what they’re doing is a form of racism, the problem is people who are putting things out there against the movement and the problem is doing things that perpetuate and play into a particular behavior, which is what I have an issue with the Bachelor franchise. Garrett’s post is the problem and the thinking that went into it. You don’t think black people have law enforcement in their family? It’s very selfish and it is your white privilege to think that that is the message that you need to put out when black people are just suffering in such a huge way in this country.”

Yrigoyen’s post was also criticized by Becca Kufrin’s friend, Bekah Martinez. This led to a disagreement and Garrett said that ‘Martinez is no longer invited over to their home.’

What Was Becca’s Response To All This?

After the podcast, Becca Kufrin put up a post on Instagram about her thoughts on it. Here’s what it said:

“This entire week has been the most difficult, & quite frankly I’m anxious for the assortment of responses that will be sent about today’s BHH podcast. Ultimately I have to look beyond myself & my feelings because what we cover in it is so much bigger & important than me.” Kufrin goes on to say, “This conversation was the hardest, most uncomfortable, but important ones that we’ve had. I value my friendship with Rachel. I also value my partnership with Garrett. So this is really effing hard. As it should be. I will be the first to admit that listening to this back, I came up short. Very short. I listen to this & wish I had said more, wish I could have expressed myself better, wish I could have given so much more than I did.” She also says, “If I’ve learned anything throughout these past 2 years, it’s that we have the beautiful capability to be better than the day before, so that’s what I’m trying my damndest at.”

I am a passionate writer just trying to figure out life and myself. Writing has always been a way of expressing myself, hence most of my work is pretty raw and unprocessed. I try my best to be unapologetic about what I write. This internship in ByProduct Ventures has allowed me to push myself and see what all I am capable of. I have always pictured the future me as someone very creative and this opportunity takes me one step towards that. Apart from writing, I also love expressing myself by painting or drawing. All I want from life is to keep learning, falling and rising and to live every moment like it is my last! (aditigautam1705@gmail.com)
